Sola Fide
Faith Alone
For Martin Luther, this verse from Romans changed everything. As a young monk, he feared God’s judgment and doubted whether he could ever be righteous enough to stand before Him. But through studying Scripture, Luther realized that righteousness is not something we achieve—it is something we receive. Through faith alone, we are made right with God because of what Christ has done.
This is the heart of Sola Fide—faith alone. Faith is not a work that earns salvation; it is the empty hand that receives it. Faith looks away from itself and clings to Jesus. It trusts that His life, His death, and His resurrection are for me.
When we say we are justified by faith, we mean that through trust in Christ, God declares us righteous even though we remain sinners. Luther called this the ‘great exchange’:
Jesus takes our sin upon Himself and gives us His perfect righteousness in return. What a joyful trade!
Faith alone brings true freedom. It releases us from fear and uncertainty because our salvation no longer depends on our goodness but on God’s grace. And that faith naturally produces good works—not as a way to earn favor, but as the grateful fruit of a heart set free.
As Luther wrote, ‘Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that a man would stake his life on it a thousand times.’ Faith clings to Christ when all else fails. Faith trusts His promises even in the dark. Faith lives not by sight, but by the sure word of God: ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that I am justified by faith in You alone. Strengthen my faith when I doubt, and let it bear fruit in love and service to others. Help me to rest each day in the promise that You have done it all. Amen.
